This article about creating parks in unused city spaces is important. People are taking vacant lots and making them into parks so the community is less empty. To me it would make the community seem way more friendly and contented. “ 'The alleys are horrific, and you have children playing in the alleys and jumping on old mattresses and doing those kinds of things, which is a danger in itself.' ” Cleveland stated this in the story. Based off of what Cleveland said I can make a connection. "In Rhode Island on the side of Antonia and Franzi (my best friends, who are sisters) house there is an alley. We would play back there and ride our bikes. It wasn't terribly safe, it was horrific. Sometimes since there would be cars coming because the alley was against houses, we would have to look out for them and each other. " This means that most kids will sometimes put play time, in front safety. This lesson reminds me of the saying, it is better to be safe than sorry. I can make a connection to my pocket park from the article. It gives me an idea, to not only have something for the kids to play on but also the parents and the elders. "She works out on the fitness equipment while her children, Cashmere, 3, and Haley, 1, bounce between the swings and the sand pits. It’s a gated park and small enough that Culpepper can see her kids playing as she exercises. " this means that the parents get to exercise and work out while the kids get to play. This means that the whole family can be full of glee. Now, after reading this article I think I feel a little more secure on how to be more safe.

In this article it is about making parks. What people are doing is they are taking places that are empty/vacant and placing the parks there so there is less empty spaces.I can also make a connection on how some people in different places are trying to make their neighborhood look nicer. Also I had an idea to make my own pocket park. It relates to my pocket park that I was planning on building. I was a lot going to place it in an empty area around my neighborhood so it would look a lot nicer and not blank.

This inspires me for my pocket park because the story said "The train that passes by the park does not seem as loud anymore." My pocket park space overlooks the busy part of Broadway. This inspires me to make my pocket park a good place for children so more people will come and it won't look like an empty lot by a busy street any more. No. Not just for children. It will be a good place for people of all ages. Like Culpepper said, "I can do my workout while my kids play." Also, my space is at the beginning of the street right by a large apartment complex which is the only thing on that side of the street for a while until you go halfway up the uphill-going narrow road to a small park. It is nice for people like me who live farther up the street in larger houses because we are closer to the park, but for the people in apartments, like Culpepper said, "being in a small apartment with kids is a lot." So it would be nice to have a park for the other end of the street and, since my space is on the corner of Casanova and Broadway, for the people in the homes on Broadway.

I personally think that the parks that are being built are a lot like our pocket park projects. I don't know what people have in their minds when it comes to the pocket park but I know what is in mine. I think that my pocket park has the same idea of the parks in the story. It has the same idea as helping little kids learn things by playing and being with nature. Like how fudge in A Fourth Grade Nothing fell of the play structure and learned to not act like or think he is a birdey. But that is not what I mean when I say that kids can learn from playing. This article is about turning unused/vacant areas into parks. They are doing this so there is less empty spaces in the area. They are taking empty, abandon spots into safe and friendly areas. I think that this will make the area safer and more fun. I can make a connection to my pocket park because my idea was to make it a safe and fun area for people to walk around in and for children to play in. I think that it is a great idea. Now beat down, old places would nice and friendly.

I fell like this relates to the pocket parks because we all did different things and some people did parks. I can't really relate this to my pocket park project cause I did a zoo/animal care place. I can say that is good idea to turn unused spaces into parks/fitness areas. This article can serve as an inspiration for all pocket parks because it takes an idea and an empty space to do it. It does take hard work but it pays off so kids and parents can have fun.

I can make a connection between the story and the pocket park idea by how we were so supposed to look up a vacant or not used area to get an idea of how to build our pocket parks. In the story, they're trying to use vacant areas to build parks consider that these vacant areas are abandoned and how they are basically a dump so if there is no use of the vacant area, they should give it a purpose, right?Other wise that area will just eventually get torn up by years to come.

I can make a connection between the story and our pocket park because in the story they were trying to find vacant areas to build the park and during our pocket park we had to find an abandoned and small area to build a pocket park and we did the exact same as it said in the article. We had to find a messy not used area basically to build the park.

I think that the parks they are building are a lot like our pocket parks because we had to put our pocket parks in abandoned places, and it is the same thing for the parks they are building. I think that this is a great idea because kids need places to play and they are starting to play in dirty alleys where they could get hurt. I can make a connection to this idea because I love to play in my backyard, but there are rusty metals and pieces of glass that were thrown over the fence. I think that it would be a lot safer if we somehow cleaned my backyard and took away all of the dangerous objects.

The connection I can make with the pocket park and the article is that it uses a vacant/empty lot/space with the things you recycle with. This connection is like the article about how it made Serenity Park, but the difference is that instead of making the park out of recyclables like the pocket park, they use other materials to make the Serenity Park. For example, they used slides, swings, and other different type materials. Before they even made it they picked up litter. But since this is a project from Sara it has to be made out of recyclables like she asked us to. So the pocket park is really different of how the Serenity Park was made. Another connection that I can make a connection with the article is that I play different sports I play and do. This connection is about Melody Culpepper because she takes her two toddlers to Serenity Park to help get them active.

A connection to this story is that every day after I'm picked up at the bus stop, I always walk back home with my grandfather. And every time, we walk pass an abandoned area where there's a fence around it. Inside, sometimes people pour in food so there are usually pigeons or little brown birds inside the metal fence. That abandoned place has been there for so many years! This article relates to the pocket park project since they're both about creating an abandoned place into something much better in order for the community to be a better place to live. The article was written, "And when they planted trees here and put this park here and grass, it allowed you to breathe. It uplifted the community,' said Cleveland." In this case, they created the dirty trashed place into a fun, splendid playground for kids. This article really inspired me an idea for the pocket park project. If they can create a old, rusty place into a park, then I could make my pocket park project into a park, too! Also, the park could teach kids a lesson that you could change an abandoned place into something better for living. I thought that changing that place into a park is a wonderful idea. It makes kids exercise more and become active while having fun! After all, in the text, the author wrote, "Playing outdoors generally means that children are more physically active."

I can make a connection because the place where I went was an old construction place. There were bags of sand and a lot of trash.I think that little place could be a tiny park. This can inspire me because it said that it helps kids with school and that it helps you be more active. If I had a park then I would put trees and nature so that people know how it feels to be outside and out of the house!

I agree with most people that vacant lots can be turned into great places for everyone. My vacant lot for my pocket park is right behind Yosemite Recreation Park. I think that the story and the park right next to mine are very inspirational and I think that I can do a lot to recreate that lonesome space. The story had a few people comment on the fact that their kids don't have a park near them. One person said "Every kid should have a park within ten minutes of their house." I think that all the grown-ups are right and kids should be active; parks are a great idea.

I can make a connection. Like Connie said, there is an empty lot next to a temple that is basically abandoned. Usually people throw like expired food in there for birds. I guess they can make it into something useful instead of keeping it empty. Also, when I go to the library, which is like down a steep hill, the other side of the street is kinda like a mountain. It's super empty. Since its right next to the library, it can turn into a bookstore. And my pocket park, I was thinking it was going to be like a random/freestyle park. This article actually inspired me to add more ideas to my pocket park.

My pocket park is this abandoned place behind Yosemite Park where there are stairs where teenagers hang out. I can make a connection because this story said, "when you walk past or drive by a place and it looks so ugly and dried out and dirty and trashy..." My pocket has all this litter, glass shards all over the stairs, and long brown grass next to the stairs. I would definitely change it. This story inspired me for my pocket park because I think it is an awesome idea to have a workout for parents, and a playground next to them so they can look after their kids. If there is any way, I hope that I can make the kids more active because if they don't, they will not get enough of the exercise they need, they are at risk of ADD and obesity.

I can make a connection in the artical with my brother. I agree that outdoor play is for and helps you do well in school which I will explain later but there is another reason that I can think of that has to do with my brother. It is SLEEP. My brother is 4 and is named Andrew. He is a pain in the back at night when he does not get his exercise or uotdoor play. Well actually come to think of it he is always a pain in the back, So I guess that makes him a really painful pain in the back. Back to my second sentence of this response outdoor play can affect how you are doing in school. All kids need some outdoor time if not the are unable to focus in school (no matter how much mindfullness they do). they realese the energy that they are holding back in school. I think that our pocket parks will be different from these parks though and not all about people getting exercise.

This article is very important. It shows how you can just turn a run Dow piece of land that nobody uses into something beautiful and beneficial. I don't live near any parks, unless you count Universal Studios. But I do live near the Runyon Canyon hiking trail. I hike with my dad sometimes, and it is easy to walk sometimes, and harder to walk sometimes. After the walks, I get tired and fall asleep. When I don't play a lot in the day, I end up not actually falling asleep until 9:00. This is why I agree with the text when it says "Serenity Park, she said, 'gives me a little air and then it gives [the toddlers] a little tiring time. So by the time I go home, they can go to sleep.'"

I can connect this audio to our pocket parks because this audio was about how you can turn an unwanted and unused space into a beautiful park. These spaces are normally dirty and unclean destinations but with a little money and effort, this space can be changed in an instant. Kids will have more things to do and explore the new world instead of staying at home and watching tv while eating junk. Why? With the recycled materials we gathered during winter break we can establish a tiny pocket park with a model of a bigger park that we can make. Our world needs this!!!!!!!!!
