I agree with you garret, although, if you only do one thing good and more things bad, you should not be rewarded because people would think that since you did more things bad, you are a bad person.

I think Junipero Serra should and shouldn't be a saint because he spread christianity to the native americans and you can't change the history. He shouldn't because he forced all the native Americans to do all the hard work and build the missions even though they don't know him and they don't want to make anything like a mission.

I sort of doubt that Junipero Serra should become a priest, because he really did treat the Natives badly, especially when not following orders, although, he is why we are all here today... On the other hand, he spread a little known religion, I also agree with the Native American, Andrew Galvan: "He admits Native Americans were treated badly at the missions, but he does not blame Serra. He blames colonialism. During colonialism, Spain and other European countries came to North America. They wanted natural resources, like gold and silver. They used Native Americans to get what they wanted."

I think Junipero Serra's canonization is very surprising because like the Native Americans in the article stated, he did work the Native Americans and tortured them. I am not totally against it though because he worked so hard for what he believed in and what he was told to do. He helped the Spanish spread Christianity but, he did work the Native Americans so I am not sure I care or know if I want him to be canonized or not.

I actually want him to be a saint. Despite the way people think about him, my motto is don't judge people by their past. Focus on how Serra acted after that (before he was dead, of course). I don't think HE was the one to be mean to the Indians. Maybe he didn't know how bad the treatment to them was. Even though I don't know him, I think he was a nice enough guy to be devoted to God an Jesus.

I disagree because that he should not become a saint because he forced Native Americans to leave their culture behind. And I think it is horrible that Junipero Serra is the one getting the honor of becoming a saint when he wasn't the one who built the missions. He used Native Americans as slaves to build it. So, shouldn't the Native Americans get rewarded?

I don't think the pope's decision on making Junipero Serra a saint was a good idea because he killed some Native Americans with diseases and even took their land and resources. Also, he took their traditional ways of living. After doing so much horrible things to the Native Americans, I don't think he deserves the position as a saint.

I think that Junipero Serra shouldn't be a saint. This is because in the Newsela article it states "Native American groups have strongly been against Serra becoming a saint. They say the Native Americans who built the missions across California were forced to work and often were treated badly." The Native Americans were forced to do something. I think that is unfair to the Native Americans.
