I think that it is a good idea to declare sainthood to Father Junipero Serra. He was a great man who helped build the missions and teach the Native Americans his beliefs. Many people see him as a monster, but I agree with Galvan. Junipero Serra was just a good man in a bad situation. Even though the Native Americans were treated badly, it wasn't entirely Junipero Serra's fault.

I agree, Natasha. Though Serra treated the Native Americans badly, he isn't all bad. He built the 21 missions and spread Christianality. So Serra should become a saint.

I came up with a completely different answer, that he should NOT be a saint but I still agree with a lot of what you said. I agree that it wasn't just him, and that he wasn't the one who started it, and that it wasn't entirely his fault. I also think that he was a good man, but not because he was spreading his religion, but because he was trying to help. The same with a lot of the mission supporters, they thought that they'd help by bringing the Native Americans into their mission, because they thought that it was easier for them. But I think that they also did it, because they couldn't take the fact that there were other religions in the world, and maybe it was stressful for them to keep on hearing other religions being spoke of.

I am with both parties. I think that father sera should and shouldn't be a saint. First of all I know that to be a saint you have to have had two miracle's to have happened to you. Father sera only had one. Also father sera did many bad things thinking they were good.

I think it is a good idea to declare sainthood to Father Junipero Serra because he was a very kind and good man because he is one of the people to help build some of the 21 California Missions.Although Junipero was bad in other situations.Native Americans were sometimes treated badly but it actually wasn't all his fault.

I think that the intention that pope Francis declares that father Serra, a priest, will become a saint will be unnecessary because if he was opposed of his sainthood for many, many years, would it be nessecary? And he used the Indians to build the missions he had hosted? He shouldn't deserve his

I think that declaring sainthood for Serra will leave some people happy and some people angry overall though, I must say that I think that he deservers this. Without him some missions wouldn't be founded and with out the missions California would be much different (some of our projects wouldn't exist either.) Also some of the bad thinks that happened to natives and other things wasn't always his fault. Though I think this is still a hard decision to make.

I think Junipero Serra should be remembered as the person that made Native Americans feel like prisoners because in the article,it said the Spanish and other European countries have been sent to America because of natural resources such as silver and gold and they used the Native Americans to get those ores and ingots. That is why I think they should remember him as a cruel man.

I thhik Serra should not be a saint. He caused Natived americans to suffer and was cruel to them. He made them build the mission instead of the mexican builers doing it. Castillo said he flet sorry for the indians and so do I.

I think Serra should be declared a saint, because he was a good person. In fact, he built the missions. Serra spreaded Christiannality to people including the Native Americans. Some Native Americans see him as a monster. But some don't. In the passage, the author wrote, "Galvan admits Native Americans were treated badly at the missions, but he does not blame Serra. He blames colonialism." I agree with him. Even though the Native Americans were treated badly, it was not all Serra's fault. Still, there should be a better way to treat the Native Americans.

I think that Father Junipero Serra should be declared sainthood because in the article it said that it wasn't Father Junipero Serra fault long time ago. It was actually because the Spanish wanted the Native Americans to give them gold and silver and all precious stuff. The Natives must've had a really hard time because of the Spanish people wanting to have gold and silver.

I disagree with the decision of making Serra a saint because he caused a lot of struggles for the Natives. I don't know anyone that admires Serra because that would mean that they are cruel. I think that Galvan is wrong. He should know that his ancestors had to work for Serra. Galvan is only thinking of himself, not about his ancestors. Casillas is right about the Natives getting punished. The Pope should think about other people too. They are not making the right decision about this.

I think that Junipero Serra should be not thinkin as a saint. He caused a horrible life for the natives and their families. I don't think that he should be a saint because he didn't help the people he just made them his slaves and taught them to be Christian. The Spanish wanted natural resources like gold and silver, so they made the natives dig and find those resources. They used the native americans to get whatever they wanted and whenever they wanted. I agree with Elias Castillo. He thinks that when people say that he is a great man it is a horrible lie. He also says that he was astounded that the pope was doing this. Although I do not quite agree with Andrew Galvan, he said that he dose not blame or hate Serra for what he did. That makes me very surprised because he himself is native american so I would think that he would be against him becoming a saint more than any of these people in this article. If I were in his place I would be disappointed and as astounded as Elias Castillo was. I wish that the pope wouldn't do this. Does he Evan realize about what an awful person he is. Juniper Serra is definitely not my hero.

I think that the Pope's idea to make Father Junipero Serra was a huge mistake. I think it's a mistake because Father Junipero Serra was a monster to Native Americans. If he was given the name"saint"then he would probably build the mission by himself and would only get some help from indian's only when needed. Another reason he shouldn't be named "saint" is because if indian's wanted to leave and live there life the way it was then they would be beaten up.If missions were training facilitys (they are) then the spanish should have built it themselves.

I don't agree that Junipero Serra should become a saint because he DID do great things for the Christian community, but since he participated in enslaving Native Americans, he is not quite suitable for the position. I think that a saint is someone who respects all religions and ethnicities, even if all saints ARE Christian. Serra did not quite respect the natives.

My opinion on the Pope's choice is that Father Serra should NOT be a saint. He should be remembered as the nice man who built the missions. Sadly, he is also remembered as the man who forced the Native Americans out of their natural habitat. For that reason he should not be a saint.

I don't agree that Junipero Serra should become a saint. Junipero Serra was a good man...at times, but he is also the man that was enslaving the Natives. He is known as the man that helped build the missions, but he was not all that good. He was not that nice to the Natives. He held them as slaves and made them work no matter what. The Natives had to work in good or bad weather conditions. A saint should be someone who respects everyone no matter what. He did not do that. I don't think he would be suitable for that kind of job. If he were to be nice to the Native Americans in the past, I think he would be great for that responsibility. But he wasn't so that's all his fault. The point is that i don't think that they should make Junipero Serra a saint

I think that Serra was just doing what he was taught to do. Evangelize. Bring Christianity into the Native Americans lives. He wasn't the person that started it, but I still don't think that he should be a saint, because a saint is a person that people would look up to, but all of these Native Americans look down upon him, and are angry about how he treated them, and how he forced his religion on them. Still, he wasn't the only one, and he was just doing what everyone else in support of the mission was doing. But I don't believe that it was a good decision to force people out of their homes and into a different one that had nothing in common with the last, and completely change the religion, culture, and ways of life. I think that Serra will be remembered in different ways. People will tell their own stories and opinions and pass them on from generation to generation. Some of the stories will be positive, and some filled with anger and hate. Once again, I do NOT think that Serra should be a saint.

I think that Serra should not become a saint because of how badly he treated the Native Americans. He was forcing them to build the missions and learn the chrishtin way of life. However it was a good idea to start the mission chain. The missions helped people that didn't have homes. Even though Serra started the mission chain it's doesn't mean he gets full credit for all the work. Imagine all the other Indians and solders that built those missions.

I think that Serra should become a saint because he did not force some of the indians to build the missions they actually decided to help build the missions of california. But he probably told the soldiers that he had to go capture any native americans that escaped the mission and punish the indian in front of all of the other indians. So actually I think he should be a saint and not be a saint a the same time.

I think that Father Serra should be a saint because he was a good man. I think they called him a monster because he was very mean to the Indians and made them work really hard. Most priests forced Indians to help on the missions and sent soilders to capture the Natives. After all he was a good person!
