Read article. Scientist are concerned that there is not enough snowpack in the mountains and too much rain instead. Why is this important for us and for California as a whole? What are some ideas people have to deal with this problem? Please use evidence from the text to support your response. Also, respond to two other student entries.

This is important for us and CA as a whole because it means that we might have to get more water storage. That would be a problem because no one will pay for it. I have one idea. The state could make us charge extra taxes, and those extra taxes could go to more water storage. The only problem with my idea is that some people might not like paying extra tax. It would be like the Boston Tea Party. An idea from the text is that we can ask Congress to change reservoir laws. The text gives evidence when it says " California may ask lawmakers to change the reservoir rules."

I agree with you Natasha because we need more water storages to store rainwater and if they have to pay with taxes that is going to cost a lot of money.

I agree with you Natasha, since we need to build a water storage. That's going to be expensive. By the way, who will pay for it?

This is important for us and CA as a whole because it means that we need to start building more water saving structures. that means that we are going it have a problem who will build the structures and who will pay for it? I have one idea it is to charge a little more money to buy water. When you buy the water it will all go to the government and they could use it to build more water saving structures. A idea that was from the text was that '' California May ask lawmakers to change the reservoir rules.''

Your entry makes me wonder, Aidan. Doesn't the water from the reservoir get used? If so, wouldn't the water level get lower as well as higher? If the water level goes lower due to water being taken out for use, there would be enough room for more water.

I am not quite sure what you are saying Aidan. I do agree that we should be saving the rain and snow. But what do you mean when you say "that means that we are going it have a problem who will build the structures and who will pay for it? This is important to us and the CA we need more water storage. so they need to raise taxes so we get more water storage so I think we should rasie the taxes.

This may affect CA as a whole because it may require an act of congress, and we would have to change state laws. Also, atmospheric rivers double the precipitation and so does loss of snow, and the lakes and reservoirs get filled to the rim. Some ideas people have to solve this problem are forecasting dams and atmospheric rivers and not just weather. This would let managers know if an atmospheric river was coming and they could adjust the reservoir levels to make sure they catch all the rainwater "with the reservoir", so to speak.

I agree with you because the reservoirs are doubling and this could be a problem in the future but for now we need the water.

This is important to California because California is in a drought and we need water to survive here. If there is no water in the future it would mean the end for us because we would be very thirsty. My idea to deal with this problem is to make more reservoirs to collect all the rainwater.

It's not quite the problem that we don't have enough water, Ashley. The problem is we can't catch the water.

I agree with you because lately, there has been less water and the reason for that is because the rain makes the snow disappear which makes the snow not melt into rivers.

I agree when you said California is in a drought. We do need reservoirs to collect rain water. But why are we worried about storing it, and not about the drought. :)

I think this is very important to California because then we will have to buy more water storage. Then someone needs to pay all the water storage but who will pay for it and who will build it that is a big problem. I think taxes may raise. Or California will ask lawmakers to reservoir rules. This would of not happened if the earth was not heating from pollution humans are making. Like burning coal and a lot of other stuff.

Right. Nobody really wants to pay for the water storage. Maybe, the lawmakers will change the reservoir rules. And burning coal and oil will release too much gas and heat up the earth.

I sort of agree and disagree with you Tommy because yes a water storage does need to be paid for to be built but what is also important is the rain melting snow.

This is crucial for California and us. In the passage, it was written, "The snow melts exactly when the need for drinking water and water for farming goes up. Rain, on the other hand, comes down all at once." That's why we need more snow than rain. A solution is to build a water storage. We could also store some water underground. Though, now we have another problem. In the text, the author wrote, "In any case, it will cause a lot of money. Who will pay for it? " Another solution is to ask lawmakers to change the reservoir rules. Well, people also can save more water so whenever we need it, we are able to use it.

The reason why it is important for us and California is because snow is actually great for us because it melts over time and goes into river which we use for water. But water can be evaporated by water which can be from rain and we have been getting more rain than snow lately.Scientist say that by 2100,more than half of snow will be gone!

I think that it is important for us and California because we already have a drought and we don't need any more worrys than the drought. In the article it states ' as the climate warms as the decades pass , the states mountain snowpack will shrink by a third. ' and ' By the end of the century , more than a half of functioning huge natural resivoir could disappear. The article is saying that the snow in Sierra Nevada, and many other places , could disappear but the water woun't .

The reason that this is important is because that the snow caps actually hold the water like a savings account for us and it doesn't just come down at once like spending all of your money. Now rain on the other hand all comes down at once and we have no place to store the extra water. So if we have less snow caps then we will have floods from the reservoirs cause they can only hold so much water. The government was planning to make underground water storage units or more reservoirs to keep the water in but this would cost a lot of money. So who would pay?

This is important for us and CA as a whole because this whole state loves the mountains, and the snowpack is decreasing, but the water is more important right now. If we can finally end this drought then I can see there is a problem right now there is a problem. Some ideas are that they don't want to have to buy more water space. But I disagree with that because it is ok to to have a little to much water but it is not ok to not have enough water. Water is a big part that keeps us alive so if you don't have that, this could be a problem.

This is important for us CA as a whole because we would need to build more water structures! Who is going to build them I wouldn't! Besides who is going to PAY for it?Some ideas are you can storage the water from rains then sell it. You will get money and get enough money to pay for the structures. Another idea is you can get some friends to help you then you guys can collect the money then pay for it and when the rains finally come you can storage the water there!

Snowpacks are very important to california as a whole. They are better than rain because rain comes all at once, and snow dos'nt melt into water until a couple months. So we are able to get all the benifit of snow and not all the benifit of rain. So think about it if all the snowpacks disapear we wont be able to get the good ample th snowpacks provide for us. The snowpacks wiil disapear because of heat. Since humans burn resources we use the heat gets trapped insid the earths atmosphere and heat melts the snow. Another reason is because global warming.

To California i think that snowpacks are better than rain because rain just falls at once and we might not catch all. Snow takes weeks to melt and we could just gather itat the mountains so we could have a lot of water.

I do not agree with you Gael. Rain isn't necessarily worse than snow, because rain is snow. It just turns to snow at a higher elevation. Snow packs are frozen rain, so they are very important to the whole state, buuuut that doesn't mean that rain is any worse either. Rain can be collected and kept to water lawns.

Snowpacks are very important and useful to California as a whole. The snowpacks can provide water when it melts, that is important because of our drought. I think that it would be a TTEERRRRIIBBLLEE situation to be in if our snowpacks never come back or rebuild again. This year the snowpacks are just one-quarter of what it usually is, and it is bad. The scientists did NOT find much snow. Scientists blame it on us humans, because we're letting a lot of gas, oil, and coal into the air. The earth is getting warmer and it's our fault. I feel horrible because I am a part of it, and my state which I need to help. This is a problem we need to fix fast.

I think that this is very important to California because we are in a REALLY big drought. Like the article said," California has suffered three years of severe drought..." What I find confusing is the article said,"...build more water storage." I thought a drought means that we don't have enough water. Why are we worried about storing water instead of not having enough water. I understand that climate change will cause a decrease in snow and an increase in rain, but will it be so much rain that we need to build more reservoirs. :)

This is important for us and CA because we may need to store more water underground or Ca cold build more reservoirs. But it is not easy. Building reservoirs costs a lot of money, and so does storing water underground. Currently CA is also in a major drought, which is not good at all. Snowpacks are very useful to California. It would be very bad if our snowpacks don't rebuild themselves. As the article said, "this year snowpacks are just one-quarter of what it usually is. The scientists blame it on us, and i agree. Now, everyone is having BBQ's and other stuff like that, but what some people don't know, its heating the world. We don't want to do that.

This is important for us because since we are in a drought we will be getting a lot of water and we wont be in a drought any more. But it is also bad because the people that live in the mountains and they will be disapointed that there bearly will be any snow.

I feel like having a lot more rain than snow in this time of year could be a great pleasure. California has bin in a drought for almost three hole years, so we desperatly need as much water as we can get. We also need to be more active in building more reservoirs in California. However, its not a very good thing that we're only having one fourth on snowpacks than we usually have in California. And, i do agree that humans are heating up our world with having smoke all over the world.

I think that this is important to us and California because we rely on the snow for water in the summer. Once the sunshine hits the mountains, melted snow falls into rivers and lakes and take place for the rain that was doing it's job in the winter. But if all of the snow pack is turning into rain, then we'd have to figure out a way to store all of the unneeded water until we needed it. That would cost a lot of money, and construction. Some ideas people have is to make more reservoirs, like lakes, rivers, or springs, and they have also thought about burying the water under ground. One way we can help as kids, is to encourage people to use less gases, and oils. But the thing is, we need these things for transportation, and many other important things. What CAN we do???

This is important to us because we need the water from the snow. But why are the scientists blaming us humans if they are humans, too. I'm pretty sure the scientists have used oil before. And something that is really confusing is droughts are when we don't have enough water. In this case, the article was about having too much water and needing more storages. If we decide to make more storages, who's going to pay for them? We can try to use less gas. We can have a big fair where we can raise money. And maybe we can trade water to states that don't have much and they can give us money.
